Where to Place Cabinet Hardware: A Placement Guide for Knobs and Pulls

Sizing gets the attention. Placement is where it actually goes wrong.

A guide to where knobs and pulls go — and when the conventions are worth ignoring.

 

You can choose the right knob diameter, the right centre-to-centre measurement, the right finish — and still end up with hardware that looks slightly off, because it's sitting two centimetres too high on the door rail, or centred on a drawer that needed it at the top third. These aren't dramatic errors. They're the kind that make a kitchen feel almost right without anyone being able to say why.

The conventions — and why they exist.

Cabinet hardware placement has broadly accepted conventions because they solve a real functional problem: where do you naturally reach when you want to open a door? Your hand gravitates to the corner closest to the opening edge — the hinge-opposite side — and to a height that minimises reach. The conventions follow that logic.

They're not rules. They're starting points. Understanding why they exist makes it easier to decide when a deliberate departure works better than dutiful compliance.

 

 

Knob and pull placement on wall cabinet doors.

Wall cabinets open from below — your arm travels up and out. The ergonomically natural reach point is the lower corner of the door, on the side that opens.

The standard placement: hardware sits in the lower corner of the door, on the hinge-opposite side, with the centre of the knob or the midpoint of the pull positioned approximately 50–75mm from the bottom rail and 50–75mm from the stile edge. On a Shaker door this typically places the hardware within the inner corner of the frame — which looks intentional because it is.

For knobs: position the centre of the knob 50–65mm from the bottom of the door and 50–65mm from the opening edge. This gives your fingers clearance from the door frame and feels natural on a standard 715mm tall wall cabinet.

For pulls: the pull sits vertically in the lower section of the door, with the centre of the pull at approximately the same 50–75mm point from the bottom rail. The pull should not be so long that it extends above the midpoint of the door.

Horizontal pulls on wall cabinet doors: some designers orient pulls horizontally on wall cabinet doors — centred left-to-right, positioned near the bottom rail. This works well when the cabinet row is shallow or when a strong horizontal line across the run of cabinetry is the intended effect. It's less ergonomically natural than vertical placement but isn't wrong — it's a visual decision rather than a functional one.

Base cabinet doors open from above — your arm travels down and out. The natural reach point is the upper corner of the door, on the opening side.

The standard placement: hardware in the upper corner of the door, hinge-opposite side, with the centre approximately 50–75mm from the top rail and 50–75mm from the stile edge.

This creates a visual mirror with the wall cabinets above — wall cabinet hardware sits at the bottom of its door, base cabinet hardware sits at the top, and at eye level the two sets appear to converge in the middle of the kitchen. It's a coherent visual logic that most well-specified kitchens follow without the homeowner necessarily being able to articulate why it feels right.

When to break the convention: some contemporary flat-door kitchens — particularly those using edge pulls or handleless cabinetry — position hardware centred horizontally on the door, about one-third from the top for base cabinets. This breaks the corner convention in favour of a more symmetrical, architectural appearance. It works when the door face is the feature, not the hardware.

 

 

Shaker doors vs slab doors: placement by door type.

The guidance above assumes a Shaker or in-frame door — one with a rail and stile frame around a recessed panel. The rail is the horizontal member at the top and bottom of the door face; it's visible, it's a natural visual reference point, and most placement conventions are built around it. Slab doors — frameless, flat-fronted — have no rail, which changes the reference point entirely.

Shaker doors: using the rail as your reference.

On a Shaker door, the rail is your anchor. The general guidance of 50–75mm from the bottom rail works well for most standard round knobs — the centre of the knob sits within the corner of the frame, and the hardware reads as sitting deliberately inside the door rather than floating on it.

Two important refinements for Shaker doors that the basic measurement doesn't capture:

For elongated knobs — egg knobs, T-knobs, or any knob with significant vertical length — the convention shifts. Rather than positioning the screw hole at 50–65mm from the rail, position the knob so its top is in line with the inner edge of the rail. This ensures the knob reads as sitting within the frame rather than encroaching into or overhanging it. The screw hole will end up lower than the standard measurement as a result — how much lower depends on the knob's length.

For pulls on Shaker doors — the key rule is that the bottom of the pull should align with the rail, not the centre of the pull. A pull that extends into the rail visually breaks the frame geometry and looks like a measuring error rather than a decision. Position the pull so its lower end meets the rail's inner edge, then adjust the screw hole positions accordingly. This is the most commonly mishandled detail in Shaker kitchen hardware installation.

Slab doors: equal distance from corner.

Slab doors — flat-fronted, frameless — have no rail to reference. The convention shifts to equal distance from the bottom edge and the opening edge: approximately 50mm from both. This gives the hardware a position that reads as considered rather than arbitrary, and creates a consistent visual logic across a run of slab doors regardless of door height or width.

For pulls on slab doors, the same equal-distance logic applies — but the reference point changes. It's the end of the pull, not its centre or screw holes, that should sit at that 50mm point. Work backwards from the pull's overall length and screw hole positions to find where to drill. This is worth calculating before marking — the screw hole for a 128mm CC pull with 20mm of bar extending beyond each hole will land at a different point than its centre measurement suggests.

Pull placement on drawers.

Drawers are more straightforward than doors. The pull is centred horizontally across the drawer width in almost every case. The vertical position is where the decision sits.

Standard drawers: for a single-height drawer (typically 150–200mm tall), the pull is centred both horizontally and vertically — visually it sits in the middle of the face.

Deep drawers: for a drawer taller than around 250mm, centring the pull vertically can feel too low and makes the drawer harder to open. Position the pull in the upper third of the drawer face — roughly 50–75mm from the top edge. This is the natural reach point and reads more considered than dead centre on a tall face.

Wide drawers: there are two approaches. A single long pull centred across the full width — the cleaner option and better suited to contemporary kitchens. Or two shorter pulls spaced at roughly one-quarter and three-quarters across the width, which is the more traditional approach and suits larger Shaker-style cabinetry.

Panelled drawers: stylish vs functional placement.

On a Shaker or panelled drawer front — one with a raised or recessed panel — there are two legitimate approaches that produce visually distinct results.

Stylish placement: hardware centred within each panel on every drawer, regardless of the drawer's height in the stack. This treats each drawer as its own object and creates a slightly irregular rhythm across the stack — each pull sits in the optical centre of its own panel face. It reads as considered and is more forgiving of mismatched drawer heights.

Functional placement: all hardware positioned at the same point within the top rail of every drawer in the stack. This creates a consistent horizontal line across all drawers — easier to reach, particularly on lower drawers, and visually more ordered when the drawer stack has mixed heights. The trade-off is that hardware on tall drawers can look as though it belongs to the drawer above.

Neither is wrong. Stylish placement tends to suit kitchens with a more collected feel; functional placement suits contemporary schemes where horizontal alignment across the run matters.

Slab drawers: the modern convention.

On flat, frameless drawer fronts the same two approaches exist — but a third has become increasingly common in contemporary kitchens: placing all hardware towards the top of every drawer, regardless of height. This creates a strong, unbroken horizontal line across the stack and is particularly effective on kitchens with uniform drawer heights and minimal visual interruption between faces.

The classic slab approach centres hardware on shallow drawers and raises it to the upper third on deeper ones — consistent with the general guidance earlier in this article. The modern approach overrides this: everything towards the top. It's a more graphic, architectural decision — the hardware becomes a repeating horizontal motif rather than something that follows each individual drawer's geometry.

Double-stacked cabinetry.

Double-stacked cabinetry — where a second, shorter row of cabinets sits above the standard wall cabinet run — is common in kitchens with high ceilings and becoming more prevalent in contemporary schemes that use the full height of the room. Hardware placement here requires a specific decision.

The upper row of cabinets tends to be shorter in door height than the cabinets below — typically 300–400mm versus the standard 715mm. A bar pull that reads well on a full-height wall cabinet can look oversized and awkward at this scale. The most considered options for the upper row are:

  • A smaller knob — round or minimal profile — which suits the shorter door proportion and creates a deliberate visual distinction between the two rows
  • The same pull as the lower row, but in a shorter length — if your chosen pull is available in multiple sizes, use the shortest variant for the upper row
  • No hardware at all on the upper row, if those cabinets are infrequently accessed — a clean door with a touch latch can work here without disrupting the lower hardware run

Placement convention for the upper row follows the same logic as standard wall cabinets: lower corner, hinge-opposite side. The exception is when you're using knobs across the upper row as a deliberate visual accent — in that case, centring the knob horizontally on the short door face can look more composed than pushing it to the corner.

Corner cabinet placement.

Corner cabinets are the most common placement mistake — because the "corner" of the door closest to the opening edge is also the corner that visually reads as inside the run, and positioning hardware there can make the door look like it has hardware attached to the wrong side.

The rule is the same as for standard cabinets — hardware on the hinge-opposite side, the side that opens — but at a corner cabinet, that opening side is the one facing the run of cabinetry, not the wall. The hardware should sit on the inner edge of the door face, at the same height (upper for base, lower for wall) as the rest of the kitchen.

On an L-shaped corner configuration with two doors meeting at 90°, keep the hardware on each door consistent with the rest of the run. Don't position hardware on both inner edges and have them appear to face each other — it creates a visual tension. If the corner configuration allows, it's worth pulling hardware slightly further from the inner edge than you would on a standard door — around 65–80mm — to give the hardware visual breathing room from where the two door faces meet.

 

 

Island and peninsula cabinetry.

Island cabinetry is seen from all sides — which means hardware placement logic changes. The hinge-side / opening-side convention still applies to island drawers and doors. But the fact that the island is a freestanding object in the room means hardware also needs to look right from across the kitchen.

Drawers on an island follow the same rule as wall drawers: centred horizontally, centred or upper-third vertically depending on drawer height. There's no visual shortcut here — the centred position reads cleanly from all angles.

Cabinet doors on an island that have hinges on the outer face (opening towards the ends of the island) should follow the upper/lower convention depending on whether they're below or at eye level. Doors that open outward from the ends of the island — where the hinge is on the island end panel — place hardware closest to the main body of the island, not the end.

The finish choice matters more on an island than anywhere else in the kitchen, because the island is a full 360° object. Hardware that reads beautifully from one angle but disappears from another — because it blends too closely into the cabinet colour — is worth reconsidering. This is where a finish with visual weight (Unlacquered Brass, Antique Brass, Polished Nickel) earns its place most clearly. It's visible, it's intentional, and it holds up from across the room.

This is the question most placement guides skip, and the one that causes the most visible errors in finished kitchens: when you have a mix of cabinet types — doors and drawers, standard height and taller, wall cabinets and a double row — should the hardware align horizontally across the entire run?

The short answer: hardware doesn't need to align to a single horizontal line across mixed cabinet types. Trying to force it usually produces hardware that looks correctly placed on no individual cabinet while appearing level across the run.

What does matter is internal consistency within each cabinet type:

  • All wall cabinet door hardware should sit at the same height from the bottom rail across the full run
  • All base cabinet door hardware should sit at the same height from the top rail across the full run
  • All standard drawers should have pulls at the same vertical position

The visual coherence comes from each type being consistent within itself — not from a single horizontal grid imposed across all types simultaneously. A run where every wall cabinet knob is at 60mm from the bottom rail, every base cabinet pull is at 60mm from the top rail, and every drawer pull is centred will look resolved even though those measurements produce three different heights on the wall.

When to ignore the conventions.

The conventions exist because they're ergonomically honest. Breaking them deliberately — rather than by accident — is a different thing entirely.

A few scenarios where a departure from convention is worth considering:

Centred placement on all doors. Some contemporary kitchens — particularly those with flat slab doors and a stripped-back aesthetic — place knobs or pulls centred both horizontally and vertically on every door, regardless of whether it's a wall cabinet or base cabinet. This reads as a considered graphic decision rather than a functional one. It works when the hardware is a strong visual element (a chunky knob, a sculptural pull) and the kitchen has the right architecture to carry it. It's the Curated Chaos approach applied to placement: the rule is broken, but deliberately.

Horizontal pulls on all doors. Orienting pulls horizontally rather than vertically — centred near the top or bottom rail depending on cabinet type — creates a strong horizontal line across the kitchen. This can reinforce the architecture of a run that's defined by its horizontal rhythm, particularly on handleless-adjacent kitchens or those with long unbroken runs of cabinetry at the same height.

No hardware on some cabinets. In kitchens that mix hardware and touch-latch cabinetry, hardware on only the frequently accessed doors and drawers — with clean door faces on those reached less often — is a legitimate and increasingly common approach. It requires clear thinking about which cabinets actually need hardware and which would work as clean faces. The risk is ending up with a kitchen that looks half-finished rather than deliberately edited. The remedy is to be specific: decide in advance which pieces get hardware and which don't, and hold to it consistently across the run.

 

 

Before you drill: a placement checklist.

  • Hardware is on the hinge-opposite side of every door, without exception
  • Wall cabinet hardware sits low — in the lower corner, 50–75mm from the bottom rail and opening edge
  • Base cabinet hardware sits high — in the upper corner, 50–75mm from the top rail and opening edge
  • On Shaker doors, pulls don't extend into the rail — the bottom of the pull meets the rail's inner edge; screw holes sit above it
  • On slab doors, use equal distance from corner — approximately 50mm from both the bottom and opening edge; for pulls, it's the end of the pull that sits at this point, not the centre
  • Drawer pulls are centred horizontally — vertically centred on standard drawers, upper-third on deep drawers
  • Wide drawers have hardware at the quarter-points if using two pulls, or a long pull centred across the full width
  • Every cabinet of the same type has hardware at the same height — check your measurements against a spirit level before committing
  • Test with masking tape first — cut pieces of tape to match the diameter of each knob or the full length of each pull, position them on the cabinet face before drilling. It takes ten minutes and prevents irreversible mistakes
